He has grown a mustache to make himself look somewhat authoritative, more intimidating than Series 1/2 John. Also, take note of the long coat and scarf, along with the gloves in his hand; all things Sherlock used to wear. He’s subconsciously trying to fill in for Sherlock, in his own mind and for the people around him who also lost a dear friend. If that isn’t heartbreaking, I don’t know what is. He even has the leather gloves.
